Schedule:

There are two social worker opportunities available.

Locations:

  • The Central branches, this position will be based out of Towson.
  • The Essex Branch, this position will be based out of Essex.

These positions will be grant funded for 2 years.

This is a full time position working 40 hours a week. All library branch staff will be required to work evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the year as part of the normal work schedule. 


Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Community Engagement Administrator, the Social Worker is responsible for supporting services to customers at Baltimore County Public Library, especially those experiencing homelessness and mental health or substance abuse issues and supporting library staff in the development of Whole Person Librarianship. This position will provide assistance, information, referrals, outreach and public programs and services to customers of all ages from all socio-economic backgrounds who frequent our 19 library branches and our mobile vehicles. This position will expand or establish partnerships with community agencies and programs to maximize service delivery, as well as oversee system-wide social service initiatives.

  • Provide one-on-one assistance to customers of all ages in branches or library vehicles, virtually or by phone. Proactively approaches and engages with customers, some with significant mental health and substance abuse behaviors.
  • Develops partnerships with organizations and Baltimore County agencies that provide services to vulnerable customers to ensure seamless coordination and maximize service delivery, and provides referrals to service agencies to support identified needs, including housing, employment, education, income, food insecurity, health care, etc.
  • Develops collaborative methods to connect these populations with Library resources and provides access and instruction.
  • Develops services and programs for the public that foster the spirit of inclusion and equity within the Library, such as coffee circles, resource fairs, and specialized programming targeting the needs of vulnerable customers.
  • Trains and supports library staff on issues affecting our most vulnerable community members including domestic violence, child abuse and adult abuse. Develops resources with and for library staff such as resource sheets and guides, information for our website, and handouts for customers. Facilitates or coordinates training in trauma informed services to staff to help them provide improved service to all customers and better understand the resources available for customers experiencing complex vulnerabilities.
  • In collaboration with appropriate staff, develop and maintain measurable program outcomes and reporting methods to ensure program effectiveness, including performance measures and preferred outcomes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Social Work
  • Minimum of two (2) years of post-graduate experience in clinical social work, with experience assessing client needs
  • Experience in group facilitation or workshops preferred
  • Currently licensed as a LMSW or LCSW in the State of Maryland
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Willingness and ability to acquire knowledge of library computer systems and applications and awareness of library services
  • Excellent communication skills, public speaking experience
  • Valid Maryland driver's license
