Schedule:
This is a full time position working 40 hours a week.  All library Branch staff may be required to work evenings, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year as a part of the normal work schedule.

Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of Library Manager, provides a strong visual presence through proactive engagement and professional interactions with customers and staff. Utilizes a friendly but firm approach to prevent and manage infractions of policies and procedures. Responsible for monitoring library building and grounds on a regular basis and responding to emergent situations that involve customers and staff. Identifies and addresses safety concerns and communicates with branch management and staff in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a consistent presence within an assigned location through ongoing patrols of library buildings and grounds and positive interactions with both customers and staff.
  • Inspects public areas, public restrooms, machinery rooms, entrances/exits, parking areas, grounds, etc. during hours of operation and at closing.
  • Manages customer and staff interactions using tactics appropriate for the situation, including de-escalation.
  • Understands and enforces system policies and branch procedures related to safety and security.
  • Uses security camera and alarm systems to assist with investigations into safety and security concerns.
  • Responds to building problems and reports them to appropriate staff.
  • Communicates necessary information to branch management, staff, Security Coordinator, and emergency services, such as local fire and police departments.
  • Documents security situations through written reports and emails.
  • Directs customer inquiries towards appropriate resources and staff within the library.
  • Serves as a resource for safety and security best practices.
  • Assists with branch-specific daily operations and tasks such as opening/closing procedures.
  • Must be able to meet scheduling requirements by arriving to work on time and staying until the end of one's shift.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends and be flexible with one's work schedule to meet daily operational requirements.
  • Must have access to transportation, as needed, to fulfill the responsibilities of the position (including meetings, events and activities at other branch locations or offsite).

Job Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • Must be able to use computers, various software and other technology to perform essential duties and assist customers.
  • One (1) year of experience in security, law enforcement or military experience; Additional years of experience in public library setting addressing security concerns, may be considered, year for year, in lieu of specific experience in security, law enforcement or military experience.
  • Must be able to lift up 25 lbs. and push/pull a wheeled cart weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, crouch and stretch for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to read small print.

We have a 14 step pay scale. Internal applicants starting pay varies based on their current step on the salary scale. We also offer, as appropriate, overtime pay, comp. time, and differential pay.
