Schedule:
This is a part-time position.  This position may be required to work evenings, Saturdays and Sundays as operationally needed.

Wednesday: 8:00 am-12:00 pm  or 1:00 pm-5:00 pm
Thursday: 8:00 am-4:30 pm
Friday: 8:00 am-4:30 pm

Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Head Cataloger, the cataloger performs original and copy cataloging for print and non-print materials in accordance with current cataloging standards and BCPL practices.  The position provides metadata and database maintenance and serves as a resource for library staff.

Core Competencies and Key Responsibilities

Cataloging & Metadata Creation
  • Performs original and complex copy cataloging to create MARC bibliographic records for all formats.
  • Interprets and applies Dewey Decimal Classification, local call number schemes, and Library of Congress subject and genre headings.
  • Searches databases such as OCLC and vendor websites for existing descriptive metadata.
  • Enhances, edits, and corrects existing bibliographic metadata according to local and national standards.
  • Pre-catalogs materials before arrival to support Cataloging and Processing production goals.
  • Catalogs and maintains foreign-language bibliographic records (Chinese, Korean, Russian, Spanish).

Authority Control & Database Maintenance

  • Maintain authority records and perform authority work in the database.
  • Investigates and resolves cataloging concerns and responds to staff questions.
  • Monitor database accuracy to ensure consistency and discoverability.  
  • Provides support and serves as a resource for staff regarding cataloging procedures and metadata standards.
Bargaining Unit Status: Eligible

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college.
  • Successful completion of the Library Associates Training Institute (LATI) within two (2) years of date of hire, or 90 hours toward MLS from and ALA accredited school within two (2) years of date of hire with completion of MLS within three (3) years of date of hire.
  • One (1) year of library experience preferred.

We have a 14 step pay scale. Internal applicants starting pay varies based on their current step on the salary scale. We also offer, as appropriate, overtime pay, comp. time, and differential pay.
